Tim,
I love this book。 With all of John Mark Comer’s books it feels like you are sitting across the table from him as he gently describes what it looks like to follow Jesus well。 This book is no exception。 John Mark is unapologetic and clear while also being filled with grace and compassion。 And I have no complaints。 Thank you John Mark - thank you Practicing the Way, thank you Jesus!

Big fan of all of John Mark Comer’s books!! His writing is simple, yet profound。 Easy to follow, and very practical and thought provoking
Jennie DaSilva,
This is the book I wish I could have given myself 5 years ago。 I almost envy the people who will read this as their introduction into spiritual formation。 John Mark is brutally honest about formation but also incredibly gentle。 I want to give a copy of this book to everybody I know。 I chuckled, teared, encouraged, and deeply convicted。 I could go on and on about this book but you just need to grab a copy for yourself。

One of the best books I’ve ever read on discipleship/spiritual growth/Christianity/following Jesus。 I especially appreciated that while the author challenges some of the cliché assumptions of typical western conservative churches, he does it with no hint of spite, condescension, or eye-rolling, only with love and hope。 This is the book for millennials with questions, for the Gen Z crowd that’s discouraged, and for all who have experienced a gap between what the church has promised and what it ha One of the best books I’ve ever read on discipleship/spiritual growth/Christianity/following Jesus。 I especially appreciated that while the author challenges some of the cliché assumptions of typical western conservative churches, he does it with no hint of spite, condescension, or eye-rolling, only with love and hope。 This is the book for millennials with questions, for the Gen Z crowd that’s discouraged, and for all who have experienced a gap between what the church has promised and what it has delivered。 (Side note: this is not an angry rant against the church, it is a loving call for the church to remember her true purpose and beautifully portray Christ to the world。) One of the best books I’ve read in the last decade。 This is a very practical, useful, hopeful, and accessible book。 Transformationally speaking, for my life, I would consider this one of my top five books。 (The Bible being #1。) 。。。more

A great book that essentially sums up John Mark Comer’s view of discipleship in the modern age。 An amazing summary on following the way of Jesus。

Beautiful。 Practical。 Essential。 The way that John Mark simplifies our walk with Jesus makes this accessible to anyone wanting to say “yes” to the gentle invitation to become a follower of Jesus。 No matter where you are at in your journey, this book is for you。 It’s also for your family, your friends, the strangers on your commute。 A must read and a must share!

Practicing the Way by @johnmarkcomer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This is one of those books that I see myself reading over and over again throughout the years。 So many good thoughts and truths。One passage that stood out to me: “Jesus is in the business of healing souls。 But while the four Gospels have dozens of stories of Jesus instantly healing people’s bodies (after which, by the way, he almost always gave them instructions to go and do something as a next step), he doesn’t seem to do the same with people’s cha Practicing the Way by @johnmarkcomer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This is one of those books that I see myself reading over and over again throughout the years。 So many good thoughts and truths。One passage that stood out to me: “Jesus is in the business of healing souls。 But while the four Gospels have dozens of stories of Jesus instantly healing people’s bodies (after which, by the way, he almost always gave them instructions to go and do something as a next step), he doesn’t seem to do the same with people’s characters。 There is not a single instance in which he simply waved his hand to take away an ugly habit or personality trait in one of his apprentices。 The opposite is true - we see their stubborn sinfulness live on for years。 Jesus didn’t zap them; he just kept teaching, rebuking, and loving them, giving them time to grow and mature。Miracles, emotional breakthroughs, and profound moments of radical change do happen, and need to happen, but they are not the daily path of disciple-ship。 They are an essential part of our development as persons, but most of our growth is a slow, incremental but noticeable maturation into adulthood。”Highly recommend。Thank you @netgalley and @waterbrookmultnomah for an ARC of this book。 It was released on 1/16, so it’s available now if you want to check it out! #netgalley #johnmarkcomer #practicingtheway #goodreads #bookstagram #literarypearlsof24 。。。more

What a practical guide! I always leave a Comer book feeling like he explains life with God in a way that is just right。 Like the life he describes is the one that Jesus really meant when he said all the things he said and lived, died, and came to life as he did。 For all of the different conclusions that Comer and I draw on many things, he always nails that and I’m so grateful for it。This book feels almost like Comer’s version of a gospel primer。 It’s full of the classic “Comer-isms” that those of us who consume a lot o I always leave a Comer book feeling like he explains life with God in a way that is just right。 Like the life he describes is the one that Jesus really meant when he said all the things he said and lived, died, and came to life as he did。 For all of the different conclusions that Comer and I draw on many things, he always nails that and I’m so grateful for it。This book feels almost like Comer’s version of a gospel primer。 It’s full of the classic “Comer-isms” that those of us who consume a lot of his teaching are used to— unabashedly charismatic, a tendency to downplay and look down his nose at the Protestant traditions that he theologically aligns with most, lots of contemplatives and mystics in his footnotes, his refusal to use widely used theological language to use his own clever terms or explanations (sometimes for better sometimes for worse) etc。 etc。 JMC wouldn’t be JMC without it。 I love much of this book。 It’s essentially his description of the gospel and spiritual disciplines。 JMC is almost like a Protestant monk mystic guide who teaches some great things。 To me what is lacking most in this book is the way Jesus’ death and resurrection feel implicit to the gospel described here, not like the lynchpin。 JMC certainly openly believes in those events, but one gets the sense that he values the way Jesus lived more than the way he died。 Obviously we need and love both, but given that Paul’s summary of the gospel is just “Christ and him crucified,” (1 Cor 2:2) I feel like it felt a little understated here。 JMC is right to believe that sometimes the church cares so much about how Jesus died that they don’t care about how he lived, but this felt like a bit of an over correction。 Still, JMC always teaches me things。 I’ll recommend this one freely, don’t be fooled by how most of this review looks like a complaint, I don’t give many books 4 stars。 。。。more

Over the past five years, my passion has grown to see more people experience the fullness of Jesus in their present lives。 Often, we fall into the trap of thinking about salvation only in terms of eternity。 However, I believe Jesus wants those who actively follow Him to be instruments used by the Holy Spirit, bringing glimpses of Heaven to earth。 'Practicing the Way' wonderfully outlines this concept, encouraging us to position ourselves in surrender for God's glory。 Over the past five years, my passion has grown to see more people experience the fullness of Jesus in their present lives。 Often, we fall into the trap of thinking about salvation only in terms of eternity。 However, I believe Jesus wants those who actively follow Him to be instruments used by the Holy Spirit, bringing glimpses of Heaven to earth。 'Practicing the Way' wonderfully outlines this concept, encouraging us to position ourselves in surrender for God's glory。 。。。more

I cannot say much more than this book is akin to "The Celebration of Discipline" for the current times。 For those of us who have felt adrift in the current Evangelical Industrial Complex, JMC lays out a pathway to a true relationship with Jesus。 I received this ARC during the worst year of my life, and even when I could not get to church, small group, etc。, in my grief, I was reminded how to BE with Jesus。 I could simply sit on the floor and just "be" with God。 Note: I received an ARC from Water I cannot say much more than this book is akin to "The Celebration of Discipline" for the current times。 For those of us who have felt adrift in the current Evangelical Industrial Complex, JMC lays out a pathway to a true relationship with Jesus。 I received this ARC during the worst year of my life, and even when I could not get to church, small group, etc。, in my grief, I was reminded how to BE with Jesus。 I could simply sit on the floor and just "be" with God。 Note: I received an ARC from Waterbrook/Multnomah and NetGalley 。。。more

I read this book in preparation for the appearance of the author, John Mark Comer, at a presentation at my church。 It is geared to someone younger than a senior citizen but still has insights into how to create a Rule of Life for any age。 He stresses Community and Discipline。 I recommend this book for anyone who is on a spiritual journey。 It will help in planning a meaningful if not successful journey。

I am quite impressed by this book。 I have read a number of books on Christian growth and spiritual formation and I would put this one at the top。 Comer reminds us we are being formed whether we realize it or not。 If we want to be formed into the people God wants us to be, we must be intentional to that end。 Comer encourages to become followers of Jesus。 We are to be whole life apprentices to Jesus。 He gives information and practical strategies to do that。 He gives three aspects: Be with Jesus, B I am quite impressed by this book。 I have read a number of books on Christian growth and spiritual formation and I would put this one at the top。 Comer reminds us we are being formed whether we realize it or not。 If we want to be formed into the people God wants us to be, we must be intentional to that end。 Comer encourages to become followers of Jesus。 We are to be whole life apprentices to Jesus。 He gives information and practical strategies to do that。 He gives three aspects: Be with Jesus, Become like Him and Do as He Did。 It is a long process for us to become the people God had in mind when He willed us into existence。I like Comer suggesting we take an audit, an honest look at the forces now forming us。 He presents a working theory of change to help us understand how we are transformed。 And finally, he encourages us to form a Rule of Life, intentionally ordering our lives around what matters most: God。I really like the informative and practical nature of this book。 While I am familiar with some of the material, Comer has insights I've never seen before。 If you read only one book this year on spiritual growth, make it this one。I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher。 My comments are an independent and honest review。 。。。more

A breath of fresh air, Comer is to the point and somehow the simplicity of the gospel as he presents it seems revolutionary in the noise of the modern world。 He graciously addresses the present issues and some of the failing attempts at solutions, setting up for the appeal to a new (or more accurately, ancient) Way to live。 He writes not from a place of anger, or scapegoating, but from a grieved yet hopeful heart。 If I was not reading a digital copy, it would have been wet with highlighter ink, A breath of fresh air, Comer is to the point and somehow the simplicity of the gospel as he presents it seems revolutionary in the noise of the modern world。 He graciously addresses the present issues and some of the failing attempts at solutions, setting up for the appeal to a new (or more accurately, ancient) Way to live。 He writes not from a place of anger, or scapegoating, but from a grieved yet hopeful heart。 If I was not reading a digital copy, it would have been wet with highlighter ink, for a book certainly readable at a popular level, it is incredibly well sourced。 Comer introduces the reader to theological concepts from a range of denominations; current neuroscience, desert fathers and mothers, famous pastors and secular psychologists。 More than all of these however, John Mark Comer has illuminated the words of the Rabbi Jesus of Nazareth, and the writers of scripture as ancient paths that we would do well to follow today。 For the new believer, this is a great guide and the best answer I know of to the next question in your spiritual journey; now what? For the honest skeptic, this book is very accommodating, and compassionate toward your doubts。 It does not suggest simple solutions to complex problems, rather invites each of us to ask of ourselves; who do I want to become? And for those that have been walking with Jesus for some time now, this book is a worthwhile opportunity to examine how your apprenticeship to Jesus is really doing。 I do not think I am overstating to say that the only people you and I will see in the community of God of the future are those who take seriously the vision casted in this book。 If you want to be one of those people, this is a great place to start。 。。。more
